Job Description: Deer Hill Expeditions seeks experienced, motivated, and caring outdoor educators to lead wilderness expeditions and service projects in the American Southwest, Ecuador, and Costa Rica. Deer Hill's purpose is to enhance an individual's appreciation of the natural world, teach minimum impact wilderness-living skills, promote stewardship of the Earth, and foster a tradition of service to native lands and peoples. We provide a challenging atmosphere in which adolescents can grow as individuals and be integral members of a small community. Responsibilities of Field Leaders: To ensure the safety and well-being of each participant and to lead expeditions that are fun while fostering participants' growth as individuals. Specific elements include: teaching wilderness living skills, off-trail route finding, adjusting a backpack, fixing MSR stoves, loading and driving vehicles with gear and people, guiding loaded rafts through rapids, facilitating fun games and activities to a group, managing a top rope site or guiding a difficult discussion of the group's dynamics. Qualifications: Previous experience leading groups in the wilderness. Experience leading and teaching the following activities: rafting, canoeing, kayaking, inflatable kayaking, rock climbing, backpacking, mountain biking, mountaineering, canyoneering and/or service projects. Current CPR + WFR certification (or equivalent: EMT / WEMT). Concern for the young people and the natural world. Training from NOLS, OB, or college outdoor programs a plus. Position Available: Activity Specialist Salary Range: $2,000 - $3,000/season
RESP: Work with groups of 7-8 students with 2 instructors to facilitate a safe and successful experience during the adventure activity portions of 10 to 26 day courses. NC & WY: sol rock climb sites and act as site manager; facilitate and manage high ropes course activities; support whitewater rafting days: Support caving activities; potentially lead mountain biking activities; provide relief to instructor's in the field; work with youth in-between courses. Wyoming only- support flat-water canoeing and Riflery FL & CA: facilitate use of ocean water craft such as motor boats or jet skis (FL only); facilitate water-based activities such as sea kayaking and snorkeling: manage logistics for groups during and between courses including managing, repairing, and transporting group gear and purchasing of food during course; provide relief to instructor's in the field. QUAL: Minimum 20 years of age (21 and older preferred);. Minimum of 2 years college experience, preferable in Recreation Therapy, Outdoor Recreation, Education, or Psychology.
