Wilderness adventure program

SOAR has provided multi-length, high adventure programs for youth diagnosed with ADHD and/or learning disabilities for over 35 years. Recognizing that the outdoors provides an ideal classroom where relevant learning can occur and life skills can be taught, emphasis is placed on developing self-confidence, social skills, and problem solving techniques. Course are co-ed, and are dveloped for youth ages 8-25 with average to above average intelligence and physical ability. Staff to student ratio is low, and instructors are hired for qualities of maturity, caring and passion for working with our population in the outdoor setting.

Activities vary by location and range from snorkeling and fishing in the Florida keys; backpacking and rafting in the Blue Ridge mountains of NC; surfing and sea kayaking in California; horsepacking and fishing in the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming; to canoeing and rock climbing in the Adirondack mountains of New York. Specialty courses include a trip tropical Belize, learning to whitewater kayak in North Carolina, earning SCUBA certifications in Florida, and even participating in a Wyoming Rodeo! Our Postgraduate program serves young adults ages 18-25.

Residential coed summer camp

A smaller-sized traditional summer camp with extremely close owner supervision. Camp owner Jane Bennett, along with her two children, camp directors Tyran Bennett and Alyson Bennett Gondek are hands-on camp directors with extensive qualifications (see below).

All counseling staff are college students and undergo extensive interviews, background checks and on-site director-led training including five days of climbing and high ropes training led by nationally known trainers, a four-day American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR and First Aid certification class led by camp director and Red Cross instructor Tyran Bennett; and Archery certification. Both directors are certified horseback riding instructors and we also send staff to a horseback safety clinic. We top off all this specialty training with a full week of camp policy and activities training immediately prior to camp start.

Our family-type atmosphere means we can get to know every camper; it gives younger campers a feeling of reassurance and belonging and older campers a chance to grow and contribute in a community of support. Our traditional program includes extensive arts/crafts and performing arts as well as sports, aquatics, horseback riding, high adventure and much more.

For over 30 years, Camp of the Rising Son has provided a Christ-centered residential summer camp to reach out to youths through focus on building relationships, experiencing creation, encouraging creativity, and having fun. Campers ages 7-12 can experience a week of traditional summer camp jam-packed with excitement. Eagle's Nest is a magical place that encourages wonder and helps children grow through meaningful experiences. Campers discover what it means to belong: to rocks and rivers, forests and friends. Children participate in a variety of self-selected activities, including wilderness adventures (backpacking, climbing, canoeing, gardening), arts (songwriting, musical theatre, darkroom photography, blacksmithing) and athletics (horseback riding, Ultimate Frisbee, archery). Kanata, under the guidance of caring counselors and staff, surrounded by natural beauty, your child can spend the summer exploring and experiencing. Not just growing in inches, but growing into his or her own.

Wilderness adventure program

SOAR has provided multi-length, high adventure programs for youth diagnosed with ADHD and/or learning disabilities for over 35 years. Recognizing that the outdoors provides an ideal classroom where relevant learning can occur and life skills can be taught, emphasis is placed on developing self-confidence, social skills, and problem solving techniques. Course are co-ed, and are dveloped for youth ages 8-25 with average to above average intelligence and physical ability. Staff to student ratio is low, and instructors are hired for qualities of maturity, caring and passion for working with our population in the outdoor setting.

Activities vary by location and range from snorkeling and fishing in the Florida keys; backpacking and rafting in the Blue Ridge mountains of NC; surfing and sea kayaking in California; horsepacking and fishing in the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming; to canoeing and rock climbing in the Adirondack mountains of New York. Specialty courses include a trip tropical Belize, learning to whitewater kayak in North Carolina, earning SCUBA certifications in Florida, and even participating in a Wyoming Rodeo! Our Postgraduate program serves young adults ages 18-25.
